Microsoft Windows DHCP Client Service Remote Code Execution Vulnerability
Risk High
Date Discovered 7/11/2006 12:00:00 AM
Description Microsoft Windows DHCP Client service is susceptible to a remote code-execution vulnerability. This issue is due to a failure of the service to properly bounds check user-supplied input prior to copying it to an insufficiently-sized memory buffer.
This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary machine code with SYSTEM-level privileges on affected computers. This facilitates the complete compromise of affected computers.

Recommendations Block external access at the network boundary, unless external parties require service. Block DHCP-related traffic at the network boundary. Ensure that only trusted hosts and networks can send DHCP traffic to vulnerable computers. Deploy network intrusion detection systems to monitor network traffic for malicious activity. Network intrusion detection systems should be deployed to monitor network traffic for signs of anomalous or suspicious activity. This includes but is not limited to requests that include NOP sleds and unexplained incoming and outgoing traffic. This may indicate exploit attempts or activity that results from successful exploits. Implement multiple redundant layers of security. An attacker's ability to exploit this vulnerability to execute arbitrary code may be hindered through the use of various memory protection schemes. Where possible, implement the use of non-executable and randomly mapped memory segments.
