Norton AntiVirus 2.0 For Microsoft Exchange Keeps Groupware Environments Safe From Virus Threats

CUPERTINO, Calif. Sept. 9, 1999 - Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for Microsoft Exchange, the most comprehensive and automatic protection available against today's viruses and tomorrow's new threats. Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for Microsoft Exchange maintains server performance and stability while providing advanced scanning and comprehensive reporting capabilities.

Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for Microsoft Exchange provides automatic scanning and cleaning capabilities to help corporations maintain a virus-free groupware environment. The new Scan Window allows users to set a time schedule on scheduled and manual scans. For example, administrators can create a scheduled scan that scans users' mailbox every Monday for up to one hour. During the next scan, Scan Window begins scanning based on where the last scan ended, thereby enabling enterprises with large databases to optimize scan time and maintain maximum server protection.

The product also includes incremental scanning and only scans items that are new or modified since the last scan. Incremental scan ensures that e-mail attachments are scanned only once, regardless of how many recipients they are addressed to; this feature streamlines activity on the network and helps increase network performance. In addition, AutoProtect scans and cleans e-mail attachments in real time as they enter the Microsoft Exchange server. Scheduled scans are also supported.

Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for Microsoft Exchange features an easy-to-use HTML-based interface that allows administrators to manage the software from any location. Comprehensive reporting capabilities enable administrators to view, print, and export valuable information in numerous report formats.

To maintain server performance, the Quarantine Server and Quarantine Console are included with Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for Microsoft Exchange. The quarantine server provides a safe zone for storing infected files and attachments for processing, thereby providing a safe environment to repair the infected files. In addition, the Quarantine Server includes Symantec's powerful Scan and Deliver feature, which enables administrators to forward suspicious files to the Symantec AntiVirus Research (SARC) for quick analysis and repair, providing corporations with the most rapid resolution to unknown viral threats. SARC has resolved 94 percent of the issues sent via Scan and Deliver within 24 hours.

Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for Microsoft Exchange delivers highly automated and hands-free virus protection. To minimize IT costs in the face of unknown virus threats, Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for Microsoft Exchange relies on NAVEX. With this unique technology, Norton AntiVirus can be updated to include protection from new and unknown viruses without having to redeploy the software, resulting in significant cost reductions.

Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for Microsoft Exchange is Windows 2000 RC1 compatible. Subsequent releases of NAV for Microsoft Exchange are planned to be windows 2000-ready. Companies who purchase Upgrade Insurance will receive the Windows 2000-ready version if it is released during the term of their Upgrade Insurance.

Price and Availability
Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for Microsoft Exchange is expected to be available in September. The price ranges from $14 to $27 per node and varies depending on the number of notes protected. For example, a 1,000 node license would cost around $19,000.

System Requirements
Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for Microsoft Exchange requires an Intel or Alpha system running Windows NT Server 4.0 or greater, Microsoft Exchange Server version 5.0 or higher, 64MB of RAM minimum, 20MB of free hard disk space, and Netscape Navigator 3.0 or higher or Microsoft Internet Explorer version 4.0 or higher.
